Thriving by Design Competition - Submission Requirements (Adult)

Submission Requirements for Grades 5-8
Submission Requirements for Grades 9-12

Narrative for Adult Teams

Each submission must include a narrative, not to exceed two (2) type-written pages using 12-point Times New Roman (or an equivalent) type, with at least one-inch side, top and bottom margins.  Include the title for your project.  You may choose the length of your answers to each of the following questions, but the total must stay within the allowed length.  Clearly delineate the answers to each of the five questions, rather than combining them in any way.

  1. Describe your design intention--what inspired you, what concepts you worked with, why you choose the elements you addressed, what you tried to accomplish.
  2. Define the problems you chose to address and explain how you did so.
  3. Explain how your design solution relates to Minnesota.
  4. Show how your team was interdisciplinary and how, if so, your team included or incorporated community/citizen input.
  5. Explain the process you used to come up with your solution.

Boards for Adult Teams

The design submissions must be two dimensional, attached to no more than two (2) foam core boards, no larger than 30" x 40” (single-sided).  No models are allowed.

The boards should contain graphic illustrations and explanatory text.

Teams that work at a community scale must include an explanation of how their ideas are adaptable or applicable to other communities throughout the state.

Electronic copies for Adult Teams

Include electronic copies of your materials on a CD.  You may include images of the entire boards or images of individual graphics from your boards.  If this requirement represents a hardship to your team, contact the competition coordinator before the April 16 submissions deadline.

Project Title and Team Identification for Adult Teams

Each submittal should have title that is included on the boards and on the narrative.  Each submittal must include, in a business-size envelope, a completed entry form that identifies the name of the project, the members of the team and the contact information for the team’s designated contact person.

Entry Fee for Adult Teams

Each submittal must include a $25 entry fee (please pay by check).  Checks can be made out to “Minnesota Rural Partners”.  Enclose the entry fee in the envelope with the entry form.

NOTE:  Nothing on the narrative pages or on the boards should identify the team or the team members.
Additional Information
